CAMERA NOTES: Canon FS100 SD (a standard definition video camera)
Before you shoot, make sure your battery is fully charged. You can determine this by turning the camera on, opening the viewfinder and pushing the DISP/BATT INFO button on the body of the camera. A graphic of a battery on the viewfinder will come on showing how full the battery is charged. To the right of the battery-graphic will be something like 48min - the approximate number of minutes the battery has left. If the battery is depleted, it may take a couple of hours to fully charge.
When youre finished charging the battery, turn the camera over. Find the CARD/BATT OPEN slider. Open this. Insert your SD card (which you have purchased at your friendly neighborhood SD card store or Walgreens, or Best Buy, or Target, or Amazon you could probably get away with a 2GB card, but you might want a 4GB, 8GB or a 16GB. A 2GB card shooting at high quality will give you about 27 minutes of recording time on the standard definition video camera. The higher numbers are just bigger storage meaning more available time in the field shooting. A 4GB card will probably give you roughly 54 minutes of recording time, etc. The class of card determines the speed of the data-rate. I tested a Class 2 card and it was fine).
Turn on the camera. In the back/butt-end of the camera is your RECORD button (silver with a red dot in the middle) which lies in the center of a wheel of options: the top red icon is for shooting STILL IMAGES, the second red icon is for shooting MOVIES, the first blue icon is for looking at the movies on the card, the second blue icon is for looking at still images on the card. Set your camera to shoot MOVIES.
Open the viewfinder. In the lower left hand corner of the viewfinder is the FUNC button. Press it. The viewfinder will display some options.
Using the small joystick on the left hand edge of the viewfinder, guide yourself down to the icon that says either XP, SP, or LP. Make sure its on XP (high quality) by navigating to XP and selecting it.
Now, on the left hand column of the display, go all the way to the bottom icon, MENU and select it by pushing the joystick like a button.
The first thing that will come up is CAMERA SETUP. You have a few options here. The most important one for starting out is deciding whether you want WIDESCREEN to be ON or OFF. Whichever one you choose, I would advise you to stick with that format for your entire project. Mixing footage that has been shot in two different formats can be dealt with, but its a pain.
Well youre pretty much ready to go. Some things to pay attention to as you go along is AWB (automatic white balance), EXPOSURE and FOCUS. You can get to both EXPOSURE and FOCUS by pressing on the joystick when it is not in the FUNC display.
