Project 02: Cuts and Love and Hate - DUE on Thursday September 6th at 11:59pm

What are you passionate about? What keeps you up all night? What are you curious about? What are you the most afraid of? What are you in love with? Collect images of anything that reminds you of this thing, this passion, this question, this truth, this lie, this love, this fear... Use whatever you need: a video camera, a still camera, a scanner. You can use, but are not limited to, video footage, photos, maps, journals, drawings, newspapers... images... lotsa images. Some of you have seen this assignment before. Your use of After Effects as a tool should change your approach to this prompt. Transitions: color, shape, movement, Make this fun. Or deeply felt. How does reading Murakami's
Speaking As An Unrealistic Dreamer make you feel? Can you relate it somehow to your project? Mostly I want you to make a video that you thoroughly, absolutely care about.
Parameters

Make this project in After Effects. If you'd like to edit sound in a different program and bring your audio into After Effects for the final output, that's fine. Your video should have a frame rate of either 29.97 fps or 30 fps. You decide whether it's DV-NTSC or HD. Your video should have 1 second of black at the beginning of the piece, followed by 58 seconds of edited video, finally ending with 1 second of black. Your video should be exactly 1 minute long.

Visual:
Your cuts should all be somewhere between 1 frame and 15 frames long. Don't make any cuts longer than 15 frames.

Audio:
No music. No voice-over. But ... YOU MUST HAVE A SOUNDTRACK. The sound must not be music (in the traditional sense). No music.... did I mention no music? No music.

Some Suggestions

Compositionally - fill the frame. Editorially - look for similarities and transitional opportunities - similar shapes, colors, textures, movements... and, alternatively, look for oppositions. Shift the rhythm. Change the tempo. Don't be lazy.
Final Output

Upload your exactly-60-second movie to your Youtube or Vimeo page by Thursday September 6th, 11:59pm. Send the link to Andrew and Deke.
Pithy Quote
“There is a place where we are always alone with our own mortality, where we must simply have something greater than ourselves to hold onto -- God or history or politics or literature or a belief in the healing power of love, or even righteous anger. Sometimes I think they are all the same. A reason to believe, a way to take the world by the throat and insist that there is more to this life than we have ever imagined.”
