Project 03: Animated Text - DUE on Thursday September 13th at 11:59pm |
Look at the examples below. Think about the examples that Andrew shows in class. Make a 40-60 second video that is made up entirely of text. The first second should be black. The last second should be black. That means there is somewhere around 38 to 58 seconds in between the two chunks of black. 38 to 58 seconds of meaty goodness in between the two slices of hearty black bread to make a delicious texty sandwich.

Suggestions |
Choose a subject you care about. A subject that frightens you. Or maybe a subject that inspires you. Or one that pisses you off. Does the reading of Make Light get you thinking in any particular directions?
Choose a font and stick with it. Using multiple fonts is a bad idea. It is rare that you'll find a broadcast/motion-graphics designer using a serif font. Most folks will use sans-serif fonts (cleaner and easier to read when animated/edited). Do your writing FIRST (at Pixar they will spend 3-4 years working on the story/writing, then they'll make the movie in 9 months - the story is very very important). Here's one way you could do it: record yourself (or record a friend or Matt Damon or Anne Hathaway) reading what you've written. Take that audio track and edit your graphic text to your recorded voice over. You can then either keep the voice-over track (if you like it) or drop it out. If you take out the voice-over track you'll still have the rhythm/pace of your reading in the edit.
Pay attention to composition, transitions, movement, rhythm. Can you read it or does it go by too fast ... or maybe it's dragging and feels too slow? Is your message coming across? Have other people look at it before you output your final version - working on something for a long time will blind you to certain small gaps and failures, get an honest friend with fresh eyes to look at your work before you send it out into the world.

Final Output |
Your 40-60 second video should have an audio track. If you use music, be strategic about why/how you're using it. Repurpose it. Remix it. Consider irony as a tool when choosing your sound. Visually the piece should be made up almost entirely of text. Upload it to your Youtube or Vimeo site and send Andrew and Deke the link.
