Project 05: Splash: Mattes and Transformations - DUE on Wednesday September 26th, 11:59pm |
Make a piece that's all transitions - where the viewer is never sure what is negative space and what is positive space. But don't stop with just using the idea of transition and transformation in a visual/design way...how can you shape meaning, tell a story, blow our minds with transformation?

Technical Parameters |
A. MATTES, MASKS, KEYS
Mattes, Keys and Masks are all names for basically the same technical idea. In addition to being compositional/layering tools, they can be very useful as tools to transition from one shot to the next... Using mattes often requires a lot of thought BEFORE you shoot (pre-production). So...think. Use some of the paint-splashing and ink-dropping ideas from the demo as you make your piece.
B. COLOR
Pay attention to the color of your piece. Think of your video like you're painting a picture. A painter chooses a "palette" - s/he restricts themselves to a selection of colors... not alllllll the colors. How can color unify your edit? This will require you to choose what you shoot and what you select to use. This will require you to be very aware of how your shots are lit - different lights will drastically effect the color of your footage. And - like everything you do with video - the better stuff you have to work with in the edit room, the better the final product will be... meaning don't try to "fix it in post" (that's always a bad idea).

Some Thoughts |
A. Heart
You can easily make the argument that transition and transformation - movement, change - is the heart of motion graphics design. You could also make the same argument for most stories, epics, religions, spiritual practices, athletic encounters, wars, family dynamics, romances... you get the picture. It's powerful.
B. Form, Function and Meaning
Is there a particular "form" that serves the function of your piece? By that I mean is there a particular WAY of telling this story or shaping this non-linear abstraction, a particular way of articulating this idea that will provide another layer of information? |

Final Output |
Your final movie should start with one second of black and end with one second of black. The entire piece should be a minimum of 30 seconds long and no longer than 2 minutes long. Include a soundscape that you've made. Upload it to your Youtube or Vimeo site and send Deke the link. |
