Project 08: Color (FearTruthEnvyShame) - DUE on Wednesday October 17th, 11:59pm |
Fear. Truth. Envy. Shame. Choose one of these words. Make a 2-3 minute piece responding to that word. Was there a moment in your life when you felt one of these words very deeply? How can you use the memory of that moment to inform this piece?
Spend some time thinking about what the word you've chosen means to YOU. While thinking about this, try to strip away as many cultural references as you can. Don't do the easy, knee-jerk Hollywood "truth/envy/etc." thing. Be as objective and brutally honest as you can. How does it feel to you?
Now, while you're shooting, think about color. Pretty pretty color. Specific colors have specific meanings. In certain religions and cultures specific colors, used in the wrong place at the wrong time, can kill you. How can color effect the mood of a piece? How is color used in paintings? In photographs? Now look at all the moving images in your world - film, t.v., the net - pay attention to the "color palette" of commercials, t.v. shows, movies, magazine ads, web-page layouts. Now think of your short video in terms of color. With everything you bring to this piece, include the thought that what you are making is a fast-moving PAINTING, a POSTER IN MOTION. How can color unify your edit? This will require you to choose what you shoot and what you select to use. This will require you to be very aware of how your shots are lit - different lights will drastically effect the color of your footage. Choose ONE of these colors to dominate your moving painting:
RED...BLUE...ORANGE (oh, that's toooo easy) ... or choose another color.

Technical Parameters |
A. ZOOMS + PANS
When you are out shooting, keep the camera moving - not by holding it in your hands, but by constantly zooming and/or panning. Make the camera live and breath. Don't be lazy. Use a tripod. It'll look better.
B. THE ELEMENTS
Try shooting the elements: fire, air, water, earth. See what you can do grounding your piece in this old magic.
C. COLOR CORRECTION
Use the After Effects Color Correction tools to unify your work into a cohesive whole.

Some Thoughts |
The more honest and specific you are about the tale you are telling, the more powerfully your audience will feel your story. If it's hard to say, other people will be thinking the exact same thing ... and they'll have a hard time saying it too. It takes courage to speak. It takes courage to let yourself be vulnerable. Art can be about courage. Art can give your audience the courage to speak. |

Final Output |
Your final movie should start with one second of black and end with one second of black. The entire piece should be a minimum of 2 minutes long and no longer than 3 minutes long. Include a soundscape that you've made. DO NOT USE ANY DOWNLOADED FOOTAGE: SHOOT IT ALL YOURSELF. Upload it to your Youtube or Vimeo site and send Deke the link. |
