Assignment 04: THE SPECIFICS OF A SITE - due between SUNDAY OCT 30 at dawn and 11:59pm TUESDAY NOV 1 - times/places to be announced
TYPES OF WORK ENGAGING THE SPECIFICITY OF SITE
1) Work that actually explores a sites physical space - making something that is specific to a sites architecture, geography, place...
2) Work that explores the metaphorical value (potential?) of a site - its history and psychogeography.
3) Intervention - work that disrupts a sites utility, a sites expected role or function... calling the site/forum into question.
4) Critical Spatial Practice - the use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and other related technologies are being used as a means to create virtual/physical intersections - where space can become visual/audible/quantifiable... where location can have multiple meanings.
PLACE + PERFORMANCE
Using the readings as points of inspiration, gather a small collaborative group (3-5 people) and create a site-specific performance. These performances will NOT take place in Flagg Hall or the Art+Design Building. Consider the audience. Consider the entire physical experience of the work - all the senses: temperature, time of day, smell, architecture, intimacy, public vs. private, sound. Consider the content of the piece. What is the best form for the content? How does the form of the piece feed the function of the piece and vice-versa? How can the site be used metaphorically? What stories does the site already have? From the roughly categorized site-specific strategies listed above, which will be the most effective for your groups piece? Can you find any opportunities to include any of the other strategies (the strongest site-specific work often explores the site on multiple levels - physically, sensually, historically and metaphorically). Consider levels of access to meaning in the work: metaphor, symbol, transformation, change ... these concepts could be helpful. Other considerations: Design? Permission vs. Non-permission? Intent? Character? Audience? Closure? Technical issues (access to power, equipment, etc.)? Weather? And how about that collaboration thing ... check this out.
For this project there is no performance time-limit. Your performance should be set-up and ready to go when the audience arrives. Make sure your group clearly communicates where the peformance is (be very specific) and when it starts. If we need to organize car-pools we will. |
